Claiming space for Palestinian music at Whitworth Art Gallery

The Guardian revealed on 22 February that the director of Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, has been forced out of his post by UK Lawyers for Israel. His crime? Recognising Israeli warcrimes as ethnic cleansing and suggesting the Palestinian arts could appear in the gallery in future. The gallery's withdrawal of such statements was not enough and now the institution has turned on its leader.

Palestinian oud player and Gazelleband leader Reem Anbar responded with this simple protest inside the gallery. A short piece of Palestinian music:

"If supporters of Israel in Britain can pressure an institution into backing out of supporting Palestinian art, this is the time we must stand up and play. Whitworth Art Gallery will not stop us from presenting the arts of Palestine." - Reem Anbar
